Carassius auratus
Also known as: Celestial Eye Goldfish, Stargazer Goldfish, Upward-Eye Goldfish
Origin: China
The Celestial Eye Goldfish has eyes that are permanently directed upward, the result of selective breeding from telescope-eye ancestors. Without a dorsal fin, it swims in a characteristic undulating motion. Its upward-facing eyes mean it cannot see directly in front or below it, so food delivery and tank design must accommodate this unique biology.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, calm water — no powerheads or strong currents. Tank: minimum 120 L, bare-bottom, keep feeding area directly above the fish's resting spots. Feeding: surface flakes or pellets that float briefly; can also use a feeding ring to keep food in place. Behaviour: sedate and delicate; best observed in a species-only or specialist tank. Compatibility: keep only with other celestial eye goldfish or bubble-eye goldfish.
