Celestichthys choprae
Also known as: Glowlight Danio, Chopra's Danio, Orange Danio
Origin: Southeast Asia (Myanmar — northern rivers and streams)

Celestichthys choprae, the Glowlight Danio, is a strikingly beautiful micro-cyprinid from the rivers and streams of northern Myanmar (Burma). Formerly placed in the genus Danio, this species has been reclassified based on molecular evidence — it belongs to the same genus as the Celestial Pearl Danio, reflecting their shared origins in Myanmar's highland fish fauna.
The colour pattern is vivid and distinctive: alternating horizontal stripes of deep metallic blue and brilliant orange to golden-yellow run from the gill cover to the tail base. Under good aquarium lighting, these stripes appear to glow with an internal luminosity that makes large schools particularly eye-catching. Males typically display more vivid colouration, especially when competing for females.
Glowlight Danios are small — reaching approximately 3 cm — and are peaceful, active schooling fish. In groups of ten or more in a well-planted nano aquarium, they create a stunning display of orange and blue in constant motion. They are compatible with virtually all non-predatory species and are an excellent choice for planted nano community tanks.
Like other danio species, the Glowlight Danio is an egg scatterer — spawning among fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or spawning mops. In a heavily planted tank, small numbers of fry may survive naturally if the adults are well-fed.
Tank Setup: A 30–40 litre nano planted aquarium for a group of ten or more. Dense fine-leaved planting (Java moss, Rotala, Anacharis), dark substrate, open swimming lanes, and gentle filtration. A tight-fitting lid — danios are active and occasionally jump.
Water Parameters: Temperature 20–26°C; pH 6.5–7.5; GH 5–15 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Prefers slightly cool, clean water. Avoid consistently warm tropical temperatures above 27°C.
Feeding: Omnivore. Feed micro pellets, crushed flake, frozen baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, and micro worms. Feed twice daily. Small mouths require small food particle sizes.
Tank Mates: Ideal with all peaceful nano species: other nano danios, Boraras, Ember Tetras, Pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus, Celestial Pearl Danios, and peaceful dwarf shrimp. Avoid any fish large enough to eat them.
Behaviour: Active, energetic schooling fish. Groups of 10+ school attractively and are active throughout the day. Males display vivid colours when competing. Non-aggressive toward all other species.
Health: Hardy once established. Sensitive to sustained high temperatures and poor water quality. Weekly 20% water changes. Avoid temperature spikes — maintain consistent conditions.
