Centromochlus perugiae
Also known as: Centromochlus Wood Catfish, Spotted Wood Catfish
Origin: South America
Centromochlus perugiae is a small auchenipterid from South American river systems with a slim, elongated body marked with fine dark spots and flecks against a pale brown background. Like Tatia species, it shares the habit of resting motionless pressed against submerged wood or roots, which can mislead new keepers into thinking the fish is unwell.
In the aquarium, Centromochlus perugiae is entirely peaceful, active mainly after dark, and tolerates a wide range of water conditions within the tropical range. It is one of the smallest catfish suitable for a community aquarium and adds a unique behavioural dimension with its wood-resting habits.
Like all auchenipterids, it is an internal fertiliser, and captive breeding has been reported in well-decorated tanks. This species is regularly available through South American fish importers and represents excellent value for the community catfish keeper.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; clean and stable. Tank: Minimum 100L; extensive driftwood, roots, and leaf litter; subdued lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; feeds after lights-out. Breeding: Internal fertiliser; captive breeding possible in mature, well-decorated setups. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with virtually all community fish of comparable or larger size.
