Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Also known as: Chagoi Koi, Tea Koi, Brown Koi
Origin: Japan
Chagoi ("tea-colored") is widely regarded as the tamest and most people-friendly koi variety. It quickly overcomes shyness and actively seeks out human interaction, often encouraging shyer koi in the same pond to feed from the hand. Its warm brown to olive coloration may seem understated, but experienced koi keepers treasure Chagoi for their personality and impressive size potential.
Water: 5–25°C, pH 6.8–7.8, very tolerant — a good choice for maturing ponds. Pond: minimum 2,000 L; Chagoi grow very large (up to 100cm+) and need space to roam. Feeding: standard koi pellets; Chagoi are voracious eaters and help tame the whole pond. Behaviour: the ultimate hand-feeder; naturally calm and inquisitive personality. Compatibility: all koi; introducing a Chagoi first tames the entire pond population.
