Chalinochromis brichardi
Also known as: Brichardi's Chalinochromis, Striped Chalinochromis
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Chalinochromis brichardi is an elegant and slender cichlid with two or three bold black horizontal stripes on a cream to tan body and elongated fin tips. It inhabits rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika and uses crevices and cave spaces for spawning, displaying strong parental care of eggs and fry.
This species is one of the more beginner-accessible Tanganyika cichlids, breeds readily, and produces cohesive family units where both parents guard the spawning site. Its relatively small size makes it suitable for modest Tanganyika setups.
C. brichardi is a popular choice for mixed Tanganyika community aquariums, pairing well with Julidochromis, small Neolamprologus, and similar-sized species.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; typical Tanganyika rocky-shore chemistry. Tank: 120 L minimum; rockwork with caves and crevices; no sharp décor. Feeding: Quality flake and pellets; frozen Mysis and bloodworm; omnivore with no special requirements. Breeding: Cave spawner; both parents guard eggs and fry vigorously; young fish stay near parents. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive around breeding site; compatible with Julidochromis, Neolamprologus, and Altolamprologus.
