Serranus tortugarum
Origin: Caribbean
Serranus tortugarum, the Chalk Bass, is a small, hardy Caribbean sea bass with a subtle but attractive pattern of blue-grey and orange-red horizontal banding. One of the easier and more peaceful smaller marine fish available — it adapts readily to captivity, accepts a wide range of foods, and tolerates a community of similarly-sized, non-aggressive fish. A synchronous hermaphrodite; pairs can spawn readily in captivity. A good choice for intermediate reef keepers who want something beyond the usual clownfish.
Reef safe with corals and larger invertebrates. May eat small shrimp. Feed frozen mysis, brine shrimp, small pellets 2–3 times daily. Standard reef parameters. Can keep in pairs or trios in systems 120+ L. Peaceful with other non-aggressive species.
