Champsochromis caeruleus
Also known as: Malawi Trout Cichlid, Trout Cichlid, Blue Trout Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Champsochromis caeruleus, the Malawi Trout Cichlid, is one of the largest and most streamlined haplochromines in Lake Malawi. Its torpedo-shaped body, large mouth, and remarkable swimming speed make it an efficient open-water predator capable of chasing down fast-moving fish in the pelagic zone. Adult males develop a uniform electric blue coloration across the entire body with a subtle yellow tinge to the dorsal fin.
This is a demanding species for the specialist keeper. The aquarium must be very large — at minimum 600 L — to allow this fast-swimming predator adequate space to exercise. Water quality must be impeccable, as a large fish produces significant waste. Tankmates must be large enough not to be consumed; virtually any fish under 15 cm is at risk once a male reaches full size.
Champsochromis caeruleus is a maternal mouthbrooder that produces large broods. Feeding a varied diet of meaty foods will maintain peak coloration. This species is for the dedicated Malawi specialist with space for a very large display aquarium.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; oversized filtration essential — two canister filters recommended for 600 L+. Tank: 600 L minimum; wide, long tank preferred over tall; minimal decor to maximize swimming space; strong water flow. Feeding: Large carnivore pellets, silversides, whole krill, and feeder shrimp; feed every 1–2 days in generous portions. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 3–4 weeks; may be challenging to breed due to male aggression in confined spaces. Compatibility: Only suitable with other large Haps of 20 cm+; will consume smaller fish; not compatible with mbuna or small Peacocks.
