Channa stewartii
Also known as: Channa stewartii, Stewart's Snakehead, Blue Snakehead
Origin: South Asia
Channa stewartii inhabits cool, fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Brahmaputra basin in Northeast India and Bhutan. It is a labyrinth fish capable of breathing atmospheric air and is a dedicated parent that guards its offspring aggressively. Its relatively small adult size compared to most snakeheads, combined with its extraordinary colouration, has made it increasingly popular among specialist hobbyists.
Water: 20-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; cooler than tropical species. Tank: Minimum 150L, heavily planted or with dense driftwood, floating plants, gapless lid essential. Feeding: Carnivore; live insects, crickets, earthworms, prawns, frozen bloodworm, raw fish flesh. Behaviour: Aggressive toward similar-shaped fish; a dedicated pair forms a strong bond. Compatibility: Best kept as a pair in a species tank; possible with very robust, fast-moving fish.
