Chapalichthys encaustus
Also known as: Picotee Goodeid, Chapalichthys
Origin: Lake Chapala basin, Jalisco, Mexico (captive bred)
Chapalichthys encaustus, commonly known as the Picotee Goodeid, is a small goodeid livebearer endemic to Lake Chapala and a few connected bodies of water in Jalisco, Mexico. Males display attractive dark transverse banding on the body with vivid orange-yellow fin margins, making it one of the more visually appealing goodeid species.
This species is critically endangered in the wild due to habitat degradation and competition from introduced species. Captive breeding by dedicated goodeid societies and hobbyists is essential to its survival. Purchasing captive-bred individuals directly supports conservation efforts.
Chapalichthys encaustus is relatively tolerant of varied water conditions, preferring slightly cooler temperatures than most tropical livebearers, and does well in planted species tanks with soft water movement.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; cooler temperatures than tropical species; avoid overheating. Tank: 80 L minimum; well-planted species tank ideal; gentle filtration. Feeding: Quality flake, frozen Daphnia, spirulina; 2 small meals daily. Breeding: Internal gestation 60+ days; 5–25 fry per brood; remove adults after birth. Compatibility: Peaceful; best in a single-species or goodeid-community tank.
