Characodon lateralis
Also known as: Rainbow Goodeid, Characodon lateralis
Origin: Río Mezquital drainage, Durango/Zacatecas, Mexico (captive bred)
Characodon lateralis, the Rainbow Goodeid, earns its common name through the striking multicolour patterning displayed by mature males — a vivid combination of blue iridescence, orange-yellow zones, and black markings on the flanks that few other goodeid species can match in colour intensity. It is endemic to the Río Mezquital drainage in Durango and Zacatecas, Mexico.
This species is one of the most visually rewarding goodeids available to hobbyists and serves as an excellent ambassador for the entire goodeid family, often attracting new hobbyists to goodeid conservation. Its relatively small size and peaceful temperament make it one of the more approachable goodeid species.
A well-maintained colony in a heavily planted species tank is a stunning display, with the males' colours developing to their fullest extent when the fish are stress-free and well fed.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; cool, clean water essential for colour expression. Tank: 80 L minimum; heavily planted; gentle flow; cool room temperatures preferred. Feeding: Quality flake, live Daphnia, spirulina wafers; colour-enhancing foods intensify the blue and orange. Breeding: Goodeid; gestation 55–65 days; 5–20 fry; species tank breeding recommended. Compatibility: Peaceful; species tank or goodeid community.
