Oliotius oligolepis
Also known as: Checker Barb, Island Barb
Origin: Southeast Asia (Sumatra, Borneo)
Oliotius oligolepis (formerly Capoeta oligolepis) inhabits soft, slightly acidic streams in Sumatra and Borneo. Its common name derives from the alternating pattern of dark scale edges that create a checked appearance across the flanks. Males develop reddish fin colouration. A peaceful and easy-care species, it does best in soft, well-planted aquaria with moderate water movement and is often overlooked in favour of more boldly coloured barbs.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–12). Tank: 60 L minimum; well-planted with some open space; moderate filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, algae-based foods, and small frozen/live foods. Behaviour: Peaceful schooler; keep in groups of 6+; males may spar briefly. Compatibility: Excellent with small tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and other peaceful cyprinids.
