Dicrossus filamentosus
Also known as: Checkerboard Cichlid, Filamentosus Cichlid
Origin: South America
Dicrossus filamentosus, commonly called the Checkerboard Cichlid, inhabits the blackwater streams of both the Orinoco and Rio Negro basins. Males develop spectacular filamentous caudal fin extensions and a highly contrasting checkerboard body pattern. This is a species strictly for experienced blackwater keepers owing to its sensitivity to sub-optimal water chemistry.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 4.0-6.0, very soft (GH 0-3); blackwater conditions essential. Tank: 60L minimum, dark substrate, leaf litter, driftwood, minimal flow, dim lighting. Feeding: omnivore — micro live/frozen foods (Artemia nauplii, Cyclops) critical; slow dry food adaptation. Behaviour: generally peaceful; mild territorial behaviour during spawning. Compatibility: blackwater biotope species tank; small non-competitive Orinoco or Rio Negro tetras.
