Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Checkerboard Discus, Chess Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Checkerboard Discus stands apart from other domestic strains through its highly structured, geometric patterning — alternating light and dark rectangular patches that tile across the body in a manner reminiscent of a chessboard. This pattern is a product of long-term selective breeding targeting the distribution of chromatophores.
Care requirements are identical to other domestic discus strains: warm, soft, acidic water with impeccable filtration and consistent water changes. The checkerboard pattern is best appreciated in a moderately lit aquarium against a mid-tone substrate.
This strain is particularly popular among discus enthusiasts who enjoy pattern diversity, and it pairs well visually with solid-coloured strains like Cobalt Blue or Red Melon in a mixed discus display.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; avoid ammonia spikes which cause stress darkening. Tank: Minimum 250 L tall, mid-tone substrate, moderate lighting to show off the geometric pattern. Feeding: Quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, mysis shrimp; feed 2-3 times daily. Breeding: Pairs form naturally within a group; moves to dedicated breeding tank when pairing behaviour observed. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, small Corydoras, and other discus.
