Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Chili Guppy, Chilli Guppy
Origin: Captive bred
The Chili Guppy is a vibrant captive-bred strain named for its intense, deep red-orange colouration reminiscent of a ripe chili pepper. Males display the bold warm colour across the body with the caudal fin often showing deeper red tones towards the margins, creating a gradient effect.
This strain is a favourite for aquascaped planted tanks where the warm reds contrast beautifully with green foliage. It is hardier than many show strains, making it accessible to beginners while still delivering a visually impressive result.
Feed a carotenoid-rich diet and maintain good water quality to sustain the intense warm pigmentation that defines this strain.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; stable, moderately hard water recommended. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted tanks complement the red colouration; moderate lighting. Feeding: Colour-enhancing flake with Astaxanthin, frozen Artemia; 2–3 meals daily. Breeding: Livebearer; 20–50 fry per brood; colour is heritable; maintain a clean lineage. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; excellent with green-coloured plants.
