Gyrinocheilus aymonieri
Also known as: Chinese Algae Eater, Indian Algae Eater, Sucking Loach
Origin: Southeast Asia, China
Gyrinocheilus aymonieri is a familiar face in the aquarium trade, sold from a young age as an algae-grazing utility fish. While effective as a juvenile, it progressively grazes less on algae as it matures and can become aggressive — particularly attaching to the sides of large flat-bodied fish like discus or angelfish using its sucker-like mouth. An albino and several patterned colour forms are commercially produced. Best reserved for robust community tanks.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 6.0–8.0, adapts to most water conditions. Tank: 200 L minimum; hiding spots essential as it becomes territorial with age. Feeding: Herbivore — algae wafers, blanched courgette and cucumber, spirulina pellets. Behaviour: Juveniles peaceful; adults territorial and may attach to flat-bodied fish. Compatibility: Best with robust, active fish; avoid discus, angelfish, and slow-moving species.
