Oryzias sinensis
Also known as: Chinese Medaka, Chinese Ricefish
Origin: China, Southeast Asia
Oryzias sinensis is distributed across China and parts of Southeast Asia in rice paddies, shallow ponds, and slow streams. It is morphologically similar to the Japanese Medaka but with a slightly more elongated body form and marginally different colour patterning. Equally hardy and adaptable, it tolerates both cool and warm water, brackish conditions, and poor water quality far better than most ornamental fish — though it should of course be given optimal conditions in captivity.
Water: 16–28 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, tolerates most water conditions. Tank: 20 L minimum; surface plants helpful; outdoor ponds suitable in mild climates. Feeding: Omnivore — medaka or tropical flake, micro pellets, small live/frozen foods. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; keep 6+ for natural group dynamics. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; mixes well with other medaka and nano species.
