Cipangopaludina chinensis
Also known as: Chinese Mystery Snail, Chinese Trapdoor Snail
Origin: East Asia
Cipangopaludina chinensis is one of the largest freshwater snails in the viviparid family, capable of reaching 6cm with a smooth, olive-green to brown shell. It is live-bearing and slow to reproduce, with adults grazing peacefully on algae and settled organic matter. Its size makes it a genuine display animal as well as a functional cleaner.
Water: 10–25°C, pH 7.0–8.0; tolerates cooler water and suits unheated or lightly heated aquariums. Tank: Minimum 60L; large tanks allow this snail to reach its full size without overcrowding. Feeding: Algae, biofilm, detritus, and sinking pellets; safe with live plants. Behaviour: Slow, peaceful grazer; live-bearing with small clutches; rarely overpopulates. Compatibility: Compatible with peaceful fish; avoid aggressive cichlids or invertebrate-eating species.
