Macropodus opercularis
Origin: East Asia (captive bred — China, Korea, Vietnam origin)
The Chinese Paradise Fish is a labyrinth fish that tolerates near-freezing temperatures, making it one of very few ornamental fish suitable for outdoor pond keeping in Northern Europe. Males display spectacular blue and red banded colouration with flowing fin extensions. Best kept in tub ponds or small garden ponds protected from severe frost. An historically important aquarium fish — one of the first tropical species introduced to European hobbyists.
Suitable for outdoor tub ponds or small garden ponds in temperate climates. Males are territorial — keep one male per setup or provide ample space. Supplement natural food with pond pellets and live/frozen invertebrates. Bring indoors or protect from frost below 5°C. Tight-fitting covers for tub ponds prevent jumping.
