Chitala chitala
Also known as: Chitala Knifefish, Humped Featherback, Indian Featherback
Origin: South Asia
Chitala chitala is native to the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Mahanadi river systems of the Indian subcontinent, where it inhabits large, slow-moving rivers and floodplains. It is among the largest featherback species and can exceed 120cm in large aquaria. The hump becomes increasingly pronounced with age, giving it a highly distinctive profile. More rarely imported than C. ornata, it requires similar care but benefits from softer, slightly cooler water reflecting its South Asian origins. Very large filtration and regular water changes are essential.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard; powerful filtration required. Tank: Minimum 1200L, very tall aquarium to accommodate adult hump; large hiding places essential. Feeding: Carnivore; whole fish, large prawns, earthworms; train onto sinking carnivore pellets. Breeding: Egg-layer with paternal care; not practical in home aquaria due to size requirements. Compatibility: Predatory; keep only with very large robust fish that cannot be swallowed.
