Protoreaster nodosus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Protoreaster nodosus is a large, dramatic sea star named for the dark brown horn-like nodules arranged across its upper surface. It is an impressive display animal but NOT suitable for reef aquariums as it will consume corals, clams, and other sessile invertebrates. Best kept in a fish-only with live rock (FOWLR) or species-appropriate system where it can roam freely.
Do not add to reef aquariums — Protoreaster nodosus will prey on corals, clams, and invertebrates. Suitable only for FOWLR or species tanks with large open substrate. Feed meaty foods including mussel, shrimp, and clam pieces weekly. Requires excellent water quality and stable salinity. Acclimate very slowly using the drip method.
