Neocaridina davidi var.
Also known as: Chocolate Shrimp, Brown Neocaridina
Origin: Captive bred (originally East Asia)
The Chocolate Shrimp is a Neocaridina davidi colour morph displaying consistent warm brown colouration ranging from milk-chocolate tan through to deep dark brown depending on the individual specimen and line quality. The colour intensifies under good lighting and with a high-quality diet rich in natural pigment sources.
Like all Neocaridina, the Chocolate Shrimp is highly adaptable and tolerates a wider range of water parameters than Caridina species. It is an excellent choice for planted aquariums with natural earth-tone aesthetics, where its colouration complements driftwood, botanicals, and brown substrate.
Females are noticeably larger and more deeply coloured than males. Colonies establish quickly and breed prolifically once water parameters are stable.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 6–15, KH 2–8; adapts to most dechlorinated tap water. Tank: minimum 20 L, natural substrate and driftwood complement colouration; add moss for cover. Feeding: biofilm, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, shrimp-specific pellets. Breeding: easy; females carry 20–30 eggs; juveniles thrive in biofilm-rich established tanks. Compatibility: peaceful with other shrimp and small fish; avoid any predatory fish species.
