Devario chrysotaeniatus
Also known as: Chrysotaeniatus Devario, Gold-banded Devario
Origin: Myanmar
Devario chrysotaeniatus is a visually spectacular devario from the rivers of Myanmar, bearing one of the most vivid colour schemes in the entire danionid family. A broad, brilliant golden-yellow mid-lateral band is flanked above and below by deep iridescent blue, creating a tricolour effect that is particularly stunning under aquarium lighting. The species name 'chrysotaeniatus' literally translates to 'gold-banded.'
In the aquarium it behaves like other devarios: fast, active, and best kept in a group of six or more. It is a strong swimmer that appreciates moderate to strong water movement and good oxygenation. Its size of around 7 cm makes it suitable for medium to large community aquariums alongside similarly sized peaceful fish.
Due to its relative rarity in the trade, captive-bred specimens may be sought from specialist importers. Its care requirements are no more demanding than the Giant Danio once acclimatised.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; excellent filtration and regular water changes maintain peak colour. Tank: Minimum 80 L; open midwater swimming space with plants along sides and back; moderate to strong current. Feeding: Omnivorous; pellets, flake, and frozen foods; live foods enhance the vivid gold and blue colouration. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rarely bred in captivity; standard devario breeding approach with live food conditioning may succeed. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium community fish; avoid very small species that may be intimidated; best with similarly active cyprinids.
