Hemiancistrus sp. LDA074
Also known as: Chubby Pleco, LDA074
Origin: Amazon tributaries, Brazil
Hemiancistrus sp. LDA074, the Chubby Pleco, is a stocky and endearing loricariid from Amazon tributaries in Brazil. Its name perfectly describes its compact, barrel-shaped body and notably rotund proportions compared to most slender Hemiancistrus relatives. The warm brown base colour is scattered with small cream to pale yellow spots. It is an omnivorous species that accepts a broad range of sinking foods.
At approximately 14 cm the Chubby Pleco is suitable for aquariums of 100 L or more. It prefers warm water (25–29°C), moderate flow, and standard Amazonian water chemistry. Caves and driftwood for shelter are appreciated. Its relatively undemanding nature makes it accessible to a wider range of hobbyists than many specialist L-number plecos.
The Chubby Pleco is peaceful and community-compatible, posing no threat to tankmates. Males are mildly territorial near caves. It is a charming and underrated species that offers a different silhouette from the typical sleek pleco form and makes a conversation piece in any South American community setup.
Water: 25–29°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; moderate flow with good filtration. Tank: Minimum 100 L; driftwood, smooth rocks, caves; standard South American community setup. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, Repashy, bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched vegetables. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; moderately achievable in stable well-maintained conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful with community fish; males mildly territorial near caves.
