About

Chuco intermedium is native to the Usumacinta and Grijalva river systems of Mexico and Guatemala, where it inhabits moderately flowing lowland waters. It displays an intricate pattern of blue-green iridescent spots and short streaks across olive-tan flanks, with distinct dark lateral spots. Males have more extended fins and develop stronger colouration. It is a relatively manageable mid-sized cichlid suitable for experienced hobbyists setting up a Mesoamerican biotope aquarium.

Care Guide

Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 8–20). Tank: 300L+ for a pair; sandy substrate with rocks and wood caves; plant edges of tank. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, frozen foods, and plant material in diet. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; manageable compared to large Vieja and Cichlasoma; pairs attentive parents. Compatibility: Suitable with other mid-sized robust Central American cichlids in larger tanks.
