Cichlasoma grammodes
Also known as: Cichlasoma grammodes, Grijalva Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Cichlasoma grammodes inhabits the Grijalva and upper Usumacinta drainages in southern Mexico, sharing its range with several other notable cichlids. It is a robust, deep-bodied fish with bold lateral barring and subtle blue-green iridescence. Males develop a nuchal hump as they mature. This species adapts well to aquarium conditions and is a reliable breeder, though it requires substantial space due to its size and territorial habits.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard (GH 10–20). Tank: 300L minimum; large flat rocks for spawning; sturdy decor that can withstand rearrangement. Feeding: Omnivore; quality large pellets, frozen foods, and plant-based supplement. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; males may develop a hump with age; spawning pairs are highly territorial. Compatibility: Best with other large robust cichlids from similar biotopes.
