Cichlasoma insignis
Also known as: Insignis Cichlid
Origin: South America
Cichlasoma insignis is found in upper Amazonian tributaries in Peru and Colombia, where it inhabits slow, heavily vegetated waterways with soft, tannin-stained water. The species develops a broad, deep body marked with prominent dark blotches along the lateral line, each scale edged in a metallic green-gold hue. Males grow considerably larger than females and display more intense colouration during courtship. A hardy and adaptable species once established, it rewards patient keepers with confident behaviour and remarkable parental care.
Water: 24–29°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft (GH 3–12). Tank: Minimum 350L; provide driftwood, dense planting or large rocks, and open swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality pellets, frozen foods including prawn and krill, and vegetable supplements. Breeding: Substrate spawner; pair bonds are strong; both parents defend eggs and fry vigorously. Compatibility: Best with other large, robust South American cichlids; not suitable with small fish.
