Cincta Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla cincta is a handsome, moderately sized pike cichlid from the upper Rio Paraguay basin and Pantanal region of western Brazil and Bolivia. The species name cincta (meaning 'girdled') refers to the prominent dark lateral band that appears to encircle the body, running from the snout to the caudal peduncle. In breeding condition, males develop intensified colouration in the dorsal and caudal fins.

The Pantanal presents a seasonal flooding cycle that significantly influences the behaviour and physiology of C. cincta. In the aquarium, simulating a subtle dry and wet season by adjusting water level and temperature slightly can help condition the fish for breeding. The species tolerates moderately hard, neutral water well — a benefit for aquarists in areas with harder tap water.

C. cincta is a mid-sized predator well suited to a species tank or a large display aquarium with robust companions. Sandy substrate, dense driftwood cover, and defined cave structures are essential. Frozen carnivore foods are taken eagerly, and the species adapts well to quality cichlid pellets.

Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 22–28°C; tolerates moderate hardness (up to 15 dGH). Tank: 250 L with sandy substrate, driftwood caves, and defined territorial zones for each fish. Feeding: Frozen prawn, mussel, earthworm, fish strips; cichlid pellets accepted once settled. Breeding: Seasonal spawner; simulate dry/wet season with temperature and water level adjustments. Compatibility: Pairs well with large catfish or robust cichlids of equivalent size; no small fish.
