Pangio cingulata
Also known as: Cingulate Kuhli Loach, Sri Lanka Kuhli Loach
Origin: Sri Lanka
Pangio cingulata is the Sri Lankan representative of the kuhli loach group, found in lowland streams and paddy field drains across the island. It displays full bands — dark, complete rings encircling the body — on a pale background, making it one of the more boldly patterned Pangio species. Its island endemism and attractive appearance give it appeal among both biotope and general community aquarists.
Care requirements are typical for the genus: soft, slightly acidic water, fine sandy substrate, hiding places among plant roots and leaf litter, and a well-secured lid. The Cingulate Kuhli Loach is peaceful with all tankmates and particularly compatible with other South Asian species such as danios and small barbs.
Feeding is uncomplicated — the species accepts a wide range of sinking micro foods including pellets, frozen bloodworm, and cyclops. Its hardiness and attractive banding make it one of the better-value kuhli loach species for aquarists seeking something a little different from the standard P. kuhlii.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28°C, soft and slightly acidic. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand, leaf litter, plants, secure lid. Feeding: Sinking micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops. Breeding: Possible in mature planted setups; eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants. Compatibility: Peaceful with all small, non-predatory community fish.
