Sturisomatichthys citurensis
Also known as: Citurá Whiptail Catfish, Citurá Sturisomatichthys
Origin: South America (Colombia — Citurá River)
Sturisomatichthys citurensis is endemic to the Citurá River in Colombia and represents one of three described species in the small genus Sturisomatichthys, which is closely related to Sturisoma but represents a distinct evolutionary lineage. These whiptails inhabit fast-flowing Andean streams and rivers at moderate elevation, characterised by clear, cool water, rocky substrates, and abundant submerged wood.
In the aquarium, Sturisomatichthys citurensis requires conditions similar to the more demanding Sturisoma species — good water flow, lower temperatures than typical tropical setups, and excellent water quality. Given its narrow natural range it is extremely rare in the hobby and commands significant interest from Loricariidae specialists when it does appear in trade.
This species is poorly documented in captivity, and hobbyists obtaining it are encouraged to share observations with the wider community. Its care is presumed to closely parallel that of similar-sized Sturisoma species, with the additional consideration of its preference for cooler, well-oxygenated conditions.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderate (GH 3–12); strong oxygenation, Andean river conditions. Tank: 120 L minimum; strong flow from powerhead or spray bar; rocks and driftwood. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette; biofilm grazing on settling. Breeding: Limited captive data; presumed similar to Sturisoma species. Compatibility: Peaceful; other Andean or moderate-flow riverine species ideal.
