Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Classic Flowerhorn, Classic FH
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Classic Flowerhorn was among the first Flowerhorn strains developed in Malaysia in the late 1990s, emerging from crosses between various Central American cichlids including Vieja synspila, Amphilophus citrinellus, and related species. The result is a robust, large cichlid with a prominent nuchal hump, bold black lateral blotches, and vivid orange-red body colouration overlaid with pearl scaling.
Classic Flowerhorns are highly interactive fish that recognise their owners and actively respond to stimuli outside the aquarium. This dog-like behaviour, combined with their striking appearance, cemented their popularity across Southeast Asia and beyond during the early 2000s.
As a hybrid, the Classic Flowerhorn exhibits hybrid vigour and is generally hardy when provided with adequate space and clean water. It is best kept singly in a dedicated aquarium where its territorial instincts do not become problematic.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness; weekly 30–40% water changes essential to manage waste output. Tank: Minimum 350L for one adult; smooth substrate or bare bottom; minimal décor to prevent injury from aggressive dashes. Feeding: Carnivore; high-protein Flowerhorn pellets, frozen bloodworm, krill, and earthworms; colour-enhancing foods improve pigmentation. Breeding: Males develop larger kok and more vivid colouration; pairs can be introduced with a divider; females lay eggs on flat surfaces. Compatibility: Solitary; should not be housed with other fish; rare successfully bonded pairs require careful introduction and a large tank.
