Anabas testudineus
Also known as: Climbing Perch, Climbing Fish
Origin: South and Southeast Asia
Anabas testudineus is perhaps the most famous labyrinth fish, renowned for its ability to crawl short distances overland using its gill plates and fins. It is native to South and Southeast Asia where it inhabits rice paddies, ponds, and rivers. A robust, voracious feeder that requires a large, secure aquarium due to its escape capabilities.
Water: temp 22–30°C, pH 6.0–8.0, tolerates very wide water condition ranges. Tank: minimum 200L; very secure, heavy lid is absolutely essential as it can escape. Feeding: omnivore — pellets, live fish, invertebrates, plant matter; not fussy. Behaviour: semi-aggressive and predatory; will eat smaller tankmates. Compatibility: best with large robust fish only; not suitable for community setups.
