Hemigrammus pulcher
Also known as: Clown Hemigrammus, Pretty Tetra, Garnet Tetra
Origin: Amazon basin, Peru
Hemigrammus pulcher, widely known as the Pretty Tetra or Garnet Tetra, is one of the most elegantly coloured small tetras native to Peruvian Amazon tributaries. Its most striking feature is the brilliant gold-and-black patch at the caudal peduncle, which gleams like a burnished coin against the translucent rose-gold body. A fine iridescent green lateral stripe adds further depth to an already beautiful fish.
This species is peaceful, gentle, and slightly more demanding than common tetras, preferring soft acidic water and well-planted tanks with good cover and dim lighting. In a carefully curated setup it is exceptionally attractive. Groups of eight or more are recommended; solitary or small groups of this shy species tend to be secretive and less visible.
Feeding on micro-sized live and frozen foods — baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms — alongside quality micro-pellets and crushed flake maintains it in full colour and good health. A rewarding choice for the planted tank enthusiast.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 1–10, KH 0–5); blackwater conditions enhance colouration. Tank: 60 L minimum; densely planted with subdued lighting, dark substrate, floating plants. Feeding: Micro-pellets, crushed flake, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; soft acidic water; condition on live foods; fry tiny. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal with other small soft-water tetras, nano rasboras, corydoras, dwarf shrimp.
