Chitala chitala
Origin: South and Southeast Asia
Chitala chitala, the Clown Knifefish, is a large, beautiful notopterid from South and Southeast Asia. Its elongated, laterally compressed silver body is decorated with a row of distinctive white-ringed black spots along the posterior flank. It swims by undulating its long anal fin — a mesmerising rippling motion. Nocturnal and secretive by day; becomes more active at feeding time. Grows slowly but eventually reaches 90+ cm in ideal conditions. A majestic display fish requiring a very large aquarium.
300+ L tank for adults. Dimly-lit tank with large caves and driftwood. Temperature 24–28 °C. Feed large live or frozen foods: fish, shrimp, earthworm, large pellets. Will consume all fish small enough to fit in its large upturned mouth. Peaceful with similarly-sized large fish.
