Chitala ornata
Origin: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam
The Clown Knifefish is a large, laterally compressed notopterid from Southeast Asia, immediately recognizable by the row of white, black-outlined spots along its lower body and the graceful rippling motion of its long anal fin used for both forward and backward locomotion. A nocturnal predator that will consume any fish it can swallow. When fully grown it commands a very large aquarium with ample open swimming space.
Requires a very large tank (1,000L+) for adult size of 100cm. Keep singly or with fish too large to eat. Feed large meaty foods: whole fish, prawns, earthworms, large pellets. Provide dim lighting and large cave structures. Nocturnal — most active after dark. Grows slowly but relentlessly — plan for the adult size before purchasing.
