Chromobotia macracanthus
Also known as: Clown Loach, Tiger Botia
Origin: Indonesia
Chromobotia macracanthus is instantly recognisable by its vivid orange body intersected by three bold black saddle bands. Juveniles sold in stores grow slowly but eventually become large, long-lived fish requiring considerable space. Social and intelligent, Clown Loaches form complex hierarchies within shoals and will actively play, click and interact with their keepers.
Water: 25-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft and slightly acidic preferred. Tank: Minimum 400 L for adults; juveniles can start in 150 L, spacious and well-filtered. Feeding: Omnivorous; sinking pellets, live and frozen foods, snails, vegetables. Behaviour: Playful, highly social; often sleeps on its side, which alarms new owners. Compatibility: Peaceful giant; keep with medium-large robust fish.
