Chromobotia macracanthus
Origin: Borneo, Sumatra
The Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus) is one of the most recognisable freshwater fish, famous for its vivid orange body with three black bands. Originating from Borneo and Sumatra, it thrives in fast-flowing rivers with soft, slightly acidic water and plenty of driftwood for hiding. Best kept in groups of six or more, these active, playful fish grow slowly but eventually reach 20–30 cm. They relish snails, which makes them excellent tank cleaners. Juveniles are sold at 3–5 cm and are ideal for large community tanks.
Keep in groups of 6+. Provide soft, slightly acidic water with excellent filtration and regular water changes. Feed a varied diet of sinking pellets, live or frozen bloodworm, and tubifex. Susceptible to Ich; treat with caution as loaches are scaleless. Sand substrate preferred.
