Panaqolus maccus
Also known as: Clown Pleco, L104, L162, Clown Panaque
Origin: Venezuela, Colombia
Panaqolus maccus is one of the smallest Panaqolus species and one of the most popular small plecos for hobbyists who appreciate the group's wood-eating diet without the large tank requirements of bigger Panaque. Its vivid orange-and-black banding is eye-catching, and it feeds primarily on driftwood supplemented by algae and vegetables.
Water: 23–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate; adaptable and hardy. Tank: Driftwood essential for feeding and shelter; minimum 75L; caves appreciated. Feeding: Xylophage/herbivore; driftwood required; supplement algae wafers and blanched veg. Behaviour: Nocturnal; peaceful; males guard small caves or driftwood crevices for spawning. Compatibility: Excellent community pleco for medium tanks; pairs well with most South American fish.
