Panaqolus maccus
Also known as: Clown Pleco, Ringlet Pleco, L104, L162
Origin: South America (Venezuela, Caroni and Apure Rivers — Orinoco tributaries)

Panaqolus maccus, the Clown Pleco, is a small, attractively patterned suckermouth catfish from the Caroni and Apure River systems in Venezuela. Known in the L-number system as L104 or L162, it is one of the most suitable and practical Pleco species for smaller aquariums — reaching only 8–10 cm at full adult size, far more manageable than the massive Common Pleco.
The colouration is distinctive and attractive: a dark brown to black base with intricate cream to pale orange-yellow wavy bands or rings covering the body and fins — the pattern that gives rise to the 'Ringlet Pleco' alternative name. The pattern intensity and colour vary somewhat between individuals and localities.
Like all Panaqolus species, the Clown Pleco is a wood-eater — it requires driftwood in its aquarium both as a physical food source (rasping wood provides dietary cellulose and associated microorganisms) and as a material for tube-like cave spawning sites. Without driftwood, Clown Plecos often decline gradually in health.
Native to the Apure and Caroni Rivers — tributaries of the Orinoco in Venezuela — this species inhabits submerged driftwood tangles and rock sections of warm, moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. In the aquarium it is primarily nocturnal, hiding under wood and in caves during daylight.
Tank Setup: A minimum 60-litre aquarium. Provide multiple pieces of driftwood (mopani, spider wood, bogwood), caves (PVC tubes, ceramic caves), and sand or fine gravel substrate. Dense planting optional. Good filtration. Subdued lighting or floating plants suit this nocturnal species.
Water Parameters: Temperature 23–29°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 4–15 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Moderate adaptability but prefers slightly soft, acidic to neutral water reflecting its Venezuelan river origin.
Feeding: Wood-eating herbivore-detritivore. Driftwood is an essential dietary component (not optional). Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, courgette, cucumber), and occasional sinking carnivore pellets. Feed in the evening.
Tank Mates: Peaceful with virtually all community fish. Manageable size makes it suitable for tanks where larger Plecos are inappropriate. May be territorial toward other Clown Plecos in small tanks — provide separate cave territories.
Behaviour: Nocturnal — hides during day, becomes active at dusk. Grazes on driftwood surfaces constantly. Cave spawner — males guard eggs in hollowed driftwood sections or PVC tubes. Relatively shy but less reclusive than many larger Plecos.
Health: Hardy once established. Driftwood is critical — without it, expect gradual health decline. Sensitive to copper. Ensure good oxygenation and regular water changes (25% weekly).
