Rasbora kalochroma
Also known as: Clown Rasbora, Big Spot Rasbora
Origin: Borneo, Sumatra
Rasbora kalochroma is one of the most visually striking medium-sized rasboras, native to the blackwater rivers and peat swamp forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Its deep red-orange body is punctuated by two large, inky black blotches — one mid-body and one near the caudal peduncle — creating a pattern reminiscent of a clown's markings. It requires soft, acidic water to thrive but is otherwise undemanding and makes an impressive display fish.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water preferred (GH 2–10). Tank: 80 L minimum; well-planted with open midwater swimming space and a dark substrate. Feeding: Omnivore — pellets, flakes, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep 6+ for best display. Compatibility: Good with other medium peaceful fish; avoid very small tankmates.
