Synodontis decorus
Also known as: Clown Synodontis, Decorated Synodontis
Origin: Congo Basin, West Africa
Synodontis decorus is one of the most spectacularly patterned large Synodontis, native to the Congo River basin and surrounding river systems. Its pale cream to white body is marked with large, irregular dark blotches and it develops a dramatically elongated dorsal fin filament with age that can trail far beyond the fish's body length.
Despite its impressive size potential it is a peaceful and generally non-aggressive species that coexists well with larger community fish. It is primarily nocturnal and benefits greatly from an aquarium with substantial cave and ledge structures where it can shelter during daylight.
This species is a long-term commitment, reaching full adult size over several years and potentially living for two decades or more with good care. A spacious tank with excellent filtration is essential.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 300 L minimum; driftwood caves, large flat rocks; dimmer lighting suits its nocturnal nature. Feeding: Large sinking pellets, frozen prawns, earthworms, Spirulina wafers; hearty and unfussy eater. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; details poorly documented; cave spawner presumed. Compatibility: Peaceful with large community fish; avoid very small species; can be housed with large cichlids, characins and other catfish.
