Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Cobalt Blue Angelfish, Cobalt Angel, Blue Angelfish
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Cobalt Blue Angelfish represents the pinnacle of domestic angelfish colour breeding for blue iridescence. Through generations of selective breeding for enhanced iridophore expression, this strain displays a deep, saturated cobalt-blue sheen across the majority of the body and fins, far exceeding the subtle blue highlights seen in most other strains.
Maintaining the cobalt blue intensity requires selecting only the most vivid fish for breeding over multiple generations. The intensity of the blue colour is also influenced by water quality, diet, and lighting — fish kept in optimal conditions with colour-enhancing foods and appropriate spectrum lighting will display the most spectacular colouration.
Cobalt blue angels are among the most sought-after domestic angelfish and typically command premium prices. They require intermediate-level care with attention to water quality and diet to maintain their exceptional colour.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.2, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; high water quality directly impacts blue colour saturation. Tank: 150 L tall aquarium; full-spectrum LED lighting with blue enhancement brings out the cobalt iridescence best. Feeding: Premium colour-enhancing pellets with spirulina and astaxanthin, frozen brine shrimp; feed 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Select the most intensely blue individuals for breeding; blue intensity is partially heritable. Compatibility: Community cichlid suitable with medium peaceful fish; provide enough space for pair territory.
