Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Cobalt Blue Discus, Blue Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Cobalt Blue Discus is one of the most iconic and enduring strains in the discus hobby. Developed through decades of selective breeding from Symphysodon aequifasciatus stock, it displays a solid, metallic cobalt-blue across the entire disc body with minimal patterning — the hallmark of a well-bred specimen.
This strain thrives in warm, soft, acidic water that mimics the blackwater tributaries of its ancestral Amazon home. A pristine environment with excellent filtration and frequent partial water changes is essential; discus are exceptionally sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate accumulation.
Cobalt Blues are best kept in groups of five or more with other discus or compatible peaceful South American species. A diet of high-protein foods — quality discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, and beef heart mix — ensures vibrant colour expression and healthy growth.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft to moderately soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4. Tank: Minimum 250 L, tall format preferred, dim lighting, driftwood and broad-leaf plants for cover. Feeding: High-protein carnivore diet; discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart mix, brine shrimp. Breeding: Open spawner on vertical surfaces; both parents guard fry and feed them via skin mucus secretions. Compatibility: Keep with other discus, cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, Corydoras, and non-aggressive peaceful species.
