Apistogramma cacatuoides
Origin: South America (Peru and Bolivia)
Apistogramma cacatuoides, the Cockatoo Cichlid, is named for the male's spectacular spiky dorsal fin that resembles a cockatoo's crest, displayed alongside vivid orange and red finnage during courtship. A cave spawner that is relatively robust for an Apistogramma and adapts to a moderate range of water conditions. One of the best dwarf cichlids for beginners wanting to explore the Apistogramma genus.
Keep 1 male with 2–3 females in a planted tank with plenty of caves (coconut shells, clay pots). Feed varied carnivore-leaning diet: live/frozen bloodworms, artemia, quality small pellets. Moderate soft to slightly hard water tolerated. Females become very defensive around eggs — separate fry if threatened by other tank mates.
