Hyphessobrycon columbianus, the Colombian Blue or Red-Blue Colombian Tetra, is from the Acanti River in Colombia. It is one of the largest and most strikingly coloured Hyphessobrycon species, with a vivid contrast between its electric blue upper body and bold red lower flanks and fins. Active and somewhat boisterous, it is best kept in large schools in well-planted aquariums.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 100 L minimum; open swimming space and robust plants; strong current tolerated. Feeding: Quality flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp; accepts most foods readily. Behaviour: Active, boisterous schooling species; keep 8+; males may be nippy in small groups. Compatibility: Best with active, robust community fish of similar or larger size.
