Hyphessobrycon columbianus
Also known as: Colombian Rainbow Tetra, Blue-red Colombian Tetra
Origin: Colombia (Acandi River drainage)
Hyphessobrycon columbianus is one of the most visually spectacular members of its genus, displaying iridescent blue flanks that shift to silver-green depending on lighting, offset by vivid orange-red fins. Endemic to the Acandi River drainage on Colombia's Pacific coast, it is a larger and more robust tetra than many hobbyist staples, reaching up to 6 cm. Males develop the most intense coloration. It is peaceful and social, best kept in groups of six or more in spacious planted aquariums. While it adapts to a range of water conditions, soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water brings out the richest colors. A highly recommended display species.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28 °C; soft to moderately hard. Adapt slowly to harder tap water if necessary. Tank: 80 L minimum; well-planted with open swimming areas. Moderate lighting to showcase iridescent flanks. Feeding: Omnivore; quality flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Eagerly accepts most foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods, provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mop. Remove adults after spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other medium South American fish. Avoid fin-nipping species or very small nano fish.
