About

Hyphessobrycon columbianus, the Colombian Tetra, is one of the larger members of its genus and one of the more assertive tetras commonly available in the hobby. Its coloration is attractive and distinctive — a silver to bluish body with vivid red-orange fins, particularly prominent in the caudal and anal fins of mature males. Males tend to be slimmer and more intensely colored, while females are deeper-bodied. Native to the Atlantic slope of Colombia, this species inhabits a range of freshwater environments and is more adaptable to varying water conditions than many Amazonian tetras. The Colombian Tetra is an energetic, fast-moving fish that does best in schools of 8 or more. In smaller groups it can develop fin-nipping tendencies, particularly targeting slow, long-finned species like bettas or fancy guppies. However, in large schools in a spacious aquarium with robust, fast-moving tankmates, this behavior is minimized as the fish focus their energy on schooling. Despite its semi-aggressive tendencies, the Colombian Tetra is a straightforward species to keep, tolerating a wider pH and hardness range than more delicate Amazonian tetras. It is a lively and visually striking addition to a robust community aquarium.

Care Guide

Tank Setup An 80-liter or larger aquarium is recommended for a school of 8 or more. This active species needs ample swimming room. Plant densely along the sides and back, leaving a wide open swimming corridor in the center. The fish's energy and activity are best accommodated in longer tank profiles.

Water Parameters Maintain pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C. This species is one of the more adaptable tetras and tolerates a range of conditions. Soft to moderately hard water is acceptable. Perform 25% weekly water changes. Avoid stagnant or polluted conditions.

Filtration A good-quality canister or internal filter with moderate to moderate-high turnover suits this active species. This is a larger, more energetic tetra that produces more waste than nano species. Reliable biological filtration is important.

Diet Feed quality flake food, medium pellets, and frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and mysis shrimp. This species accepts virtually all foods and is not fussy. Feed twice daily. Large groups consume significant food; avoid overfeeding.

Tankmates Keep with robust, active species: larger tetras, barbs (not tiger barbs, which are themselves nippy), danios, rainbowfish, and active catfish. Avoid long-finned, slow species like bettas, fancy guppies, or angelfish. The Colombian Tetra's semi-aggression is manageable with appropriate companions.

Breeding Egg scatterers; conditioning with live foods promotes spawning readiness. Use a separate breeding tank with fine-leafed plants or spawning mop, soft slightly acidic water, and dim lighting. Remove parents after spawning. Fry hatch in 24–36 hours and can be fed baby brine shrimp when free-swimming.
