Crenicichla colorea
Also known as: Colorea Pike Cichlid, Jewel Pike Cichlid, Venezuelan Dwarf Pike
Origin: Atabapo and Inírida river systems, Venezuela/Colombia
Crenicichla colorea is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful members of the genus, a relatively small pike cichlid from the Atabapo and Inírida river systems in Venezuela and Colombia. Males in breeding condition display a breathtaking combination of vivid red, orange, and electric blue colouration across the flanks and fins — a chromatic intensity rivalling many reef fish.
As a blackwater specialist, C. colorea demands very soft, very acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5) with negligible hardness. RO or rainwater is strongly recommended, with the addition of leaf litter and driftwood to further acidify and tannin-stain the water. Temperature should remain at the higher end of the tropical range (26–30°C), reflecting the warm Venezuelan lowland rivers it inhabits.
At only 15 cm, C. colorea can be maintained in a 150 L species tank — an unusually modest footprint for a pike cichlid. The species is cave-spawning and can be bred by experienced blackwater aquarists willing to meet its strict water chemistry requirements. A once-in-a-lifetime species for the dedicated Crenicichla enthusiast.
Water: Very soft, very acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5, near-zero hardness) at 26–30°C — RO water essential. Tank: 150 L minimum; blackwater setup with leaf litter, driftwood, and dim lighting. Feeding: Small carnivore foods — frozen bloodworm, small prawn, Artemia; small pellets once established. Breeding: Cave spawner; strict water quality essential; condition with live Artemia and bloodworm. Compatibility: Species tank only; no fish small enough to be eaten; very sensitive to water chemistry.
