Calloplesiops altivelis
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea
Calloplesiops altivelis, the Comet or Marine Betta, is a breathtaking plesiopid fish with a dark-brown body covered in white polka dots and spectacular long, flowing fins. Its tail bears a prominent eye-spot that mimics the head of a moray eel as a predator deterrent. Despite being a slow-moving predator toward small prey items, it is safe with corals and larger invertebrates.
Provide extensive rockwork with caves and overhangs — the Marine Betta is a shy, nocturnal predator that requires secure hiding places. Feed with live or frozen small fish, shrimp, and meaty marine foods. Tank mates must be larger than its mouth. Will prey on small fish and shrimp. Once settled, it becomes a visually spectacular centerpiece species.
