Carassius auratus
Also known as: Common Goldfish, Goldfish, Wakin
Origin: China
The Common Goldfish is the ancestor of all fancy goldfish varieties and remains one of the most widely kept fish in the world. It is extremely hardy, tolerates a wide range of water conditions, and can live for decades with proper care. Its active nature and fast growth mean it quickly outgrows small aquariums and does best in ponds.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, highly tolerant — can survive brief temperature fluctuations. Tank: minimum 200 L per fish; ideally kept in a garden pond. Feeding: floating or sinking pellets, peas, lettuce, earthworms; feed what is consumed in 2 minutes. Behaviour: fast, active, and bold; will jump if startled, so cover the tank. Compatibility: other single-tailed goldfish and koi; avoid with fancy goldfish.
