Gasteropelecus maculatus
Also known as: Common Hatchetfish, Spotted Hatchetfish
Origin: South America (Panama to Peru, Amazon tributaries)
Gasteropelecus maculatus, the Spotted or Common Hatchetfish, ranges from Panama to Peru and is distinguished by a dark horizontal stripe and subtle spotting along its silvery flanks. Like all hatchetfish, it is exclusively a surface dweller that feeds on small insects falling onto the water. A tight-fitting aquarium lid is non-negotiable as it is a powerful jumper.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and slightly acidic. Tank: 80 L minimum; secure lid mandatory; surface vegetation for cover and security. Feeding: Floating flake, freeze-dried insects, live fruit flies and small live invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful surface-dwelling schooling fish; keep 6+; exclusively inhabits the top layer. Compatibility: Pairs well with mid-water and bottom-dwelling peaceful community fish.
